Swarm Music Mixer

Swarm music mixer is an interesting and innovative android app which lets you create music and melodies by simply touching and rotating on the screen. Swarm music mixer uses accelerometer sensor which embeds on mobile phone itself to control the movement of android agent (green color one) to create melody. It can in fact create compositions on its own if left idle along. The application is developed by swarm intelligence algorithm. The different color agents carry different music clips, which is also connected from internet. While user control the android agents collide with other agents, the application will plays different music clips. Those music clips also mix together in different sound channel. This application is developed for testing swarm intelligence; self organize programming on mobile device.

Using parametric design to control physical surface through serial communication. This design methodology allows user to export result in physical world during design process. But also this design methodology is constrainted by material and software, hardware communication itself. At this point, my research enables parametric design can be more flexible to use in early stage of design process and testify how material affect the parametric design. Part of my master thesis. Dynamic Building Simulator

In our approach, we develop a building simulator which allows users not only to show different patterns on façade but also to calculate the simula-tion results in early stage of the building design. The control system can export optimization result to this software to exam the results. The Façade incorporates forty-eight addressable units with Electro-chromic films and PDLC films on different design behaviors. We can claim that this part of design simulation is not only useful for designers to make design decision, but also it provides the control system knowledge base to understand the geometrical information and the knowledge base (sun path, architectural geometry, incident solar). The software in this design stage is implemented inside three-dimensional software; Rhino which takes advantage of accu-rate real time three dimensional geometry displays and is easy to navigator and check information. This video shows how we developed a dynamic system in parametric design software to caculate energy performance.

Touch_modeling

Touch modeling is a parametric platform which is developed on mobile device, for iphone and android. This application especially focuses on using multi-touch technology to generate parametric function. The project is developed for my personal research as test a proof-concept to use mobile device as design tools for users to create different design. The tool now is still very basic, only deal with basic geometry, such a cube, sphere, etc. Technically, the application allows users to manipulate design in two fingers( android version) or five fingers( iphone version) and after users finish design process. The application allows users export OBJ file to any other 3D software to use. Furthermore, Users can also go to machine process, such as CNC, 3d printer to print out model.

Eletrochromic and PDLC window Research

Sustainable practice emerges from a carefully crafted choreography between different elements within the built environment. In our design, we program the relationship between both the active and passive elements of the architecture as an interactive system where each component works with each other in a continuous, dynamic feedback loop. The building is designed to be able to decide what would be the most sustainable course of action given the variations in environmental conditions or user needs. It can dynamically customize its behavior by taking into account both real-time conditions, long-term goals and user preferences to re-optimize building performance while maximizing user expectations. This video illustrates the conceptural usage of our facade system which combines with two kind different materials, Eletronchromic and PDLC film.

DYNAMIC SOLAR RESONSIVE STRUCTURE

In order to archive better performance and to optimize the design process, designers use simulation environment, such as solar, wind analysis to do preliminary study. Traditional way of simulation environment uses analysis software, such as ECOTECH to analyze and optimizes a 3d digital surface in order to satisfy prescribed daylight or wind requirements and optimization algorithm by software then export the datasheet as design reference. The disadvantage of the design process has to use multiple soft wares to explore various design, optimization and simulation in order to ind the appropriate form and performance and to show how they are interrelated.
In this chapter, I will demonstrate two studies by using parametric design to interactively generate alternative forms and to optimize the design process.

To design the connected sustainable home of the future, the FBK/MIT Mobile Experience Lab alliance began by looking at a selection of case studies and built designs of both architectural and energy systems that illustrate the emergent notion of critical radical sustainability. The alliance then investigated and developed innovative procedures to design and manufacture composite materials with variable properties. Taking into account local conditions, the alliance applied these procedures to design home configurations that take advantage of both local environmental conditions and new materials. Finally, by linking previous explorations on material distribution and form factors the alliance created a landscape design strategy to optimize location, form factor, orientation, materials, and fabrication processes. The final product will be a fully realized, functioning, sustainable and connected home built in the province of Trento, Italy

the tiles will also be able to display real?time floor plans where the cognitive system can suggest the occupants alternative design configurations with their associated affordances. The tiles will also be used as an occupant location sensing system that will provide data to model presence and flow within the building. Panels will have different typologies and can be combined for different room settings. For example panels with privacy film covered windows can be brought together to achieve better light distribution within the household without sacrificing the privacy needs of the inhabitants. Reprogrammable Space: Tiles We will design reprogrammable, touch?sensitive floor tiles that can function as design?aids for reconfiguring architectural space. As furniture and ?robo-panels? are adjusted over time, the tiles can sense the new configurations and communicate them to the cognitive system to revise the heating, cooling and air circulation needs for the new spaces created by occupants. What can happen if we think about a dynamic grid that respond to people needs without necessarily satisfy the standard by law? We can change the structure and the compactness of the grid in order to obtain the best configuration for a specific internal distribution or to satisfy the occupant behaviour! Behavior modeling with unepected form generation

This part of experiment is part of my personal research which test swarm intelligence with form finding algorithm. Traditional design software is designed to reach designer's expectation, so the design strategy use expected variables to the form and generate the result what users need. In this experimental study, the application uses behavior modeling knowledge to provide form unexpected variables. Here unexpected variables only means the form won't know where the variables (agents), It only sense if agents is close or design need to be update (either functionally or design). Agents also have different rules to wander inside the space. Both agents and form components embeds different rules which makes the form represent differently by both agents' and components behaviors. This application is developed under game engine which support physical simulation (collide, transform) and open GL rendering. This research also test if we can just only use computer to calculate representation process and iterate the design process. This project use boid algorithm with avoid obstacle and other agents

This research exams how parametric design can be used as output tool to control physical object, but also can receive information from physical environment. At this point, I am assuming this design methodology can help the bi-direction constraint in parametric design. In this research, I used Shape memory alloy to control flexible wire. The length of shape memory alloy is controlled through Miro-controller by receiving information from parametric. But also in this physical model, it transfer the physical data from bend sensor that enables user manipulate the physical model and transfer the data to the parametric design. Because of this limitation, we develop a new system that could become a smart one by incorporating computers, sensors, and devices.
